Kalkaringi, NT 2021 - Day 1

After a few days travelling around Litchfield national park we were excited to start the day in Kathrine. After a few errands around town, and a massive food shop,  we met up with David and James and started our journey towards Kalkarindji.

Throughout the trip we took turns with the GoPro to record our thoughts and expectations of what is to come. We were also struck by the varied landscape that seemed to be changing every hour. Sharing a one lane road with both cars and road trains was an interesting experience, but the car radios were pretty handy and great fun!

Eventually we stopped in Top Springs for lunch and petrol, still a few hours from our destination. Seemingly in the middle of nothing the pub was quite nice and the last petrol station before arriving in Kalk.

Just before heading off we took our first group photo in front of the road sign and continued on the narrow road.

As we were getting closer to Kalk, we took off on a dirt road and saw the Wave Hill walk off pavilion in the distance. We conquered some light four wheel driving, crossing a dry river bed, with curious cattle on both sides. Our campsite ended up being a beautiful open grassland next to the dry riverbed in close proximity to Junparrak. The field was scattered with abandoned cars and various objects, many left behind from the old wave hill station.

We all had dinner together around the fireplace, a lovely ending to our first day. We are excited for what is to come tomorrow, our first day in town.
